Sunderland son who died in 'murder-suicide' was cremated miles away from his mum in another city

A man who died in suspected murder-suicide was cremated in Durham - miles away from where his mum was buried in another city.

Janice and Michael Woolford were found at their home in Satley Gardens, Tunstall, in Sunderland, shortly after 10am on February 26, after reports of concerns for a woman.

On Friday loved ones gathered to say a final final to "much-loved" Janice in Sunderland following her tragic death, before she was buried.

But two days before, Michael Woolford was cremated in Durham some 13 miles away.

Emergency services rushed to the scene on February 26 - but sadly officers discovered two bodies at the home, off Essen Way.

The body of 68-year-old Janice had been stabbed while the body of 44-year-old Michael had not suffered any visible injuries but police believed he had taken a large number of drugs.

They were both pronounced dead at the scene.

An inquest into both deaths opened and was adjourned until September 9.

Loved ones gathered at Holy Rosary R/C Church in Farringdon Friday, March 20 at 1pm, to say a final goodbye to Janice, followed by interment at Bishopwearmouth Cemetery at 2pm.

Meanwhile, her son Michael was cremated in a private ceremony at Durham Crematorium on Wednesday, March 18.

Tributes flooded in through social media for the “lovely woman”.

One person wrote: “Such a tragedy, so sorry for the rest of your family.”

Another said: “Lovely lady, total shock”, while another added: “So sad, my heart goes out to the rest of the family and friends, so tragic.”

One woman said: “I knew Janice from many years ago and I am absolutely devastated about this news.”
