Sunderland signing Trai Hume has 'amazing attributes' but needs time to settle, says Lee Johnson

Sunderland's new signing Trai Hume has 'amazing attributes' but Sunderland must be patient with him, according to Lee Johnson.

The young right-back joined the Black Cats from Northern Ireland League side Linfield this week, and made the trip to Wycombe for Sunderland's 3-3 draw at Adams Park.

But, while Hume did take part in the pre-match warm-up, he was not included on the teamsheet.

Johnson says the 19-year-old needs time to settle in on Wearside, but insists that he will have a part to play at some stage this season.

"It's a big jump for the lad, there's a lot of detail in the philosophy for him to take onboard," said Johnson.

"We have to be careful with that one.

"I like him a lot, I think he has some amazing attributes, and he is one for the future who can probably surprise us for the now.

"But he has to settle, he has to earn the trust of his teammates, he has to understand the philosophy.

"It wasn't the day for him yesterday - he's had one-and-a-half days' training - but I wanted him to have the experience of the matchday environment.

"He has self-belief, he has focus, and he is hungry kid. There is going to be an opportunity at some point and he will be thrown in, but just not yet."
