Sunderland sign Jake Vokins on loan from Southampton

Sunderland have announced the loan signing of left-back Jake Vokins from Southampton.

The 20-year-old joins has joined the Black Cats until the end of the season having made two Premier League appearances at St Marys.

The youngster made his debut in July 2020 against Brighton & Hove Albion before starting against Arsenal in the top-flight earlier this week.

He has been a part of Ralph Hasenhüttl’s matchday squad a number of times this season while also featuring heavily for their Under-23's.

Speaking after his arrival on Wearside, Lee Johnson said: “Jake is a bright young player, who is clearly rated by Southampton.

"Our full-backs have a similar philosophy to him – defensively and offensively – so we think he will fit in nicely and we are looking forward to working with him.

"We are grateful to Southampton for entrusting us with his development.”

Vokins has represented England at Under-17, Under-18 and Under-19 level and was part of the Three Lions side that reached the UEFA U17 European Championship final - playing alongside Phil Foden and Jadon Sancho.

Speaking about signing for the Black Cats, Vokins said: “I want to come here and play games, and help the team get promoted this season.

"I feel I can bring my qualities to the team; I’m good on the ball and I can deliver crosses, so hopefully that allows the team to score more goals. It’s a big club and I can’t wait to get started.”

Vokins will be in contention to make his debut against Gillingham on Saturday.
