Sunderland set a new Stadium of Light record as they put eight past Aston Villa's youngsters

Sunderland's resounding EFL Trophy win over Aston Villa's youngsters marked the first time in more than 60 years since the Black Cats scored eight goals in a competitive game.

Purists will - quite rightly - point to the fact that last night's 8-1 victory on Wearside came against Villa's U21 side, but the current Trophy format means that this counts as a first-team fixture as far as Sunderland are concerned.

And that makes this the first time they have scored eight goals in a competitive game since September 1, 1956.

Not only that, it is Sunderland's record victory at the Stadium of Light, and it equals the margin of victory that saw the Black Cats beat Oxford United 7-0 in September 1998.

And the nine goals scored also equalled the highest scoring game at the Stadium of Light, which saw Sunderland win 6-3 against Exeter City in the EFL Cup in 2015.

But the last time Sunderland scored eight goals in a game, they thrashed Charlton Athletic 8-1 at Roker Park in the top flight, then known as the First Division.

Johnny Hannigan scored a hat-trick and Len Shackleton netted twice, with further goals from Stan Anderson, Charlie Fleming, and a penalty from Ray Daniel.

Sunderland were 4-0 up at half-time and when they added four goals without reply in the second half, they looked on course to match their biggest home victory until John Hewie scored a consolation for the Addicks in the 89th minute.

Against Villa U21s, Charlie Wyke led the way with two goals, while Morgan Feeney, Josh Scowen, Max Power, Danny Graham, George Dobson, and Aiden O'Brien, scored one apiece.

And that set another record, with this the first time Sunderland have had seven goalscorers in a single game.
