Sunderland see £1m bid for Dion Sanderson rejected, according to report

Wolves have rejected a £1m bid from Sunderland for defender Dion Sanderson, according to a report.

Mailonline claims Sunderland have made an 'opening bid' for the 21-year-old, who spent last season on loan with the Black Cats where he became a key figure in the club's promotion bid before injury cut short his campaign in April.

But the report says the Premier League side have turned down Sunderland's approach, with Wolves understood to value their academy product at £2m.

Sunderland boss Lee Johnson is an admirer of Sanderson, calling him a 'Rolls-Royce' player and hinting during the season that he would be keen to bring him back to the Stadium of Light if possible this summer.

Wolves recently signed Colombian centre-back Yerson Mosquera for £4.5m, which means Sanderson has been pushed further down the pecking order at Molineux and it may tempt the club to sell a player who is about to enter the final year of his contract.

Whether, in the current climate, Sunderland could afford the £2m asking price is another matter.

Championship sides Cardiff, Stoke, Birmingham, Luton, and Millwall, have all shown interest in Sanderson and may be better placed to meet Wolves' pricetag.

Sanderson made 27 appearances in all competitions for Sunderland last season, scoring one goal, and was voted Sunderland AFC Supporters' Young Player of the Year.
