Sunderland school remains open after Year 6 pupil tests positive for coronavirus

A Year 6 pupil has tested positive for coronavirus in a primary school in Sunderland which has since confirmed it will remain open.

Hasting Hill Academy on Tilbury Road, Thorney Close, Sunderland, said they were notified a pupil had tested positive for the virus on Monday afternoon (September 21).

School leaders said they are working with the Department for Education and Public Health England who advised them to keep the school open to Year 6 pupils.

The confirmed case was "absent for some of last week" and therefore advice given to them was that there would be "minimal risk."

All Year 6 classrooms and toilets were also thoroughly deep-cleaned overnight.

In a statement, the school said: "We were made aware that a Year 6 pupil from our school has tested positive for Covid-19.

"We are currently working with Public Health and the Department for Education. We will be following their advice as to the next steps.

"We would like to manage this well and we ask for your support with this matter. We know this is a worrying time for everyone involved and we hope anyone affected recovers quickly.

"We have been advised by Public Health to remain open for Year 6 pupils tomorrow."

It is one of a number of schools across Sunderland and County Durham which have confirmed coronavirus cases.

Other recently affected schools include; Washington Academy, Seaham High School, Venerable Bede C of E Academy and Biddick Academy.
