Sunderland school head teacher resigns after investigation into 'anonymous allegations'

A headteacher of a Sunderland school has resigned weeks after an investigation was launched into "anonymous allegations".

Southmoor Academy Principal Steve Garrett resigned from his position at the end of the Easter holidays to "pursue new career opportunities.".

It follows reports from early March that Mr Garrett was "absent from work" after professional advisors had been asked to investigate anonymous allegations it had received.

Dr John Brown (Chair of Trustees), confirmed the former chief executive officer had resigned and said the school was "grateful" for his service.

He said: "At the end of the Easter Holidays, Mr Garrett decided to resign as Principal of Southmoor after many years’ service to pursue new career opportunities elsewhere.

"Southmoor is grateful to him for his contribution and service."

Tracey Garner is now registered as the vice-principal and acting headteacher of the secondary school.

In November 2107, the academy on Ryhope Road was rated ‘good’ by Ofsted.
