Sunderland's trip to Tranmere Rovers could move depending on FA Cup progress

Sunderland have advised fans that the date of the Black Cats' trip to Tranmere Rovers at the end of the month is subject to change.

The game at Prenton Park is currently due to take place on Tuesday, January 28, but could be put back 24 hours if Tranmere progress to the fourth round of the FA Cup.

Tranmere will take on Premier League Watford in an FA Cup third round replay on Thursday, January 23, and if Micky Mellon's side win that game they will face either Wolverhampton Wanderers or Manchester United in the fourth round on Sunday, January 26.

And that could see their League One fixture against Sunderland pushed back to Wednesday, January 29 - but fans will have less than one week's notice if the date is changed.

Tranmere fought back from 3-0 down to draw 3-3 with Watford in the original third round tie and the replay was due to take place on Tuesday, but that game was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch as Storm Brendan lashed the North West.

Tranmere last reached the fourth round of the FA Cup in 2004 when they were eventually knocked out by Millwall following a quarter-final replay - with Sunderland then losing against the Lions in the semi-final at Old Trafford.
