Sunderland's 'thank you' message to NHS and key workers during lockdown

Sunderland AFC have issued a 'thank you' message to all the essential key workers who are keeping us safe during the lockdown.

And they've made sure anyone passing the Stadium of Light can't fail to see their heartfelt support.

We're now into the sixth week of lockdown during the coronavirus pandemic, with the country waiting for news of when things can slowly start to the return to normal.

Football, of course, has been suspended since the middle of March, with plans currently being drawn up for a return - most likely behind closed doors - over the summer.

But while there is no action on the pitch, the club were keen to get a message of support to all the people currently working to battle the virus, from NHS workers to the likes of drivers ensuring important deliveries are still made.

A billboard on Southwick Road, just opposite the stadium near the Colliery Tavern, read: "To our NHS staff, carers, emergency services, shop workers, delivery drivers and everyone else keeping us safe and well at this time."

The Black Cats are awaiting news of how the League One season will finish, with suggestions of a top-eight play-off to decide promotion issues should it prove impossible to complete he full campaign.
