Sunderland's League One fixture vs Oxford United postponed

Sunderland's match against Oxford United that was due to be held this weekend has been postponed.

The match was due to take place at 3pm on Saturday, October 9 at the Stadium of Light but it will be rescheduled due to the Black Cats having several players called up for international duty.

Had the match gone ahead, Lee Johnson would have been without several key players as Tom Flanagan and Cory Evans have been called up to the Northern Ireland senior side, while Niall Huggins - who has been impressing since his arrival from Leeds United - is included in the Welsh U21 squad.

Bailey Wright is also expected to be called up to the Australia squad. Additionally, Dennis Cerkin has been named in the England U20 squad and Callum Doyle is included in the U19s, although youth internationals do not count towards the total needed for a postponement.

Johnson's side will now have a break from the league following their fixture against Portsmouth this weekend, where they will hope to extend their lead at the top of League One. It is not clear what will happen to the EFL Trophy game which is due to take place on October 5.

Oxford United are in indifferent form at the moment, as they had gone five games without a win in all competitions before defeating Accrington Stanley 5-1 last weekend. They sit 8th in the league on 15 points, having played 10 games. There is no date as yet for the rearranged game.
