Sunderland's latest Portsmouth clash moved for television, despite what it means for away supporters

The latest episode of Sunderland's rivalry with Portsmouth will be shown live on Sky Sports.

In a terrible piece of scheduling for away fans, the game will kick off at 12.30pm on Saturday August 17.

It will be the fifth time the sides have met since March 31, and the fierce rivalry they built up last season shows no signs of abating.

Portsmouth defeated the Black Cats on penalties in the Football League Trophy final but Jack Ross' side got revenge in the play-offs, winning a two-legged semi-final 1-0 on aggregate. In between times the two sides met in a 1-1 draw at the Stadium of Light marred by a couple of idiotic Pompey fans.

Samuel Parrott threw a smoke bomb into the home fans and another supporter was ejected from the main stand. There was also an incident in the Fratton Park play-off game where Sunderland's Luke O'Nien was punched and kicked after being knocked over an advertising hoarding.

The Black Cats had Glenn Loovens and Alim Ozturk sent off in last season's games, with both teams winning one each (plus Pompey coming out on top in the Wembley penalty shoot-out). Portsmouth finished fourth in League One, the Black Cats fifth, three points behind.

Given the antipathy between the clubs, there might not be too much sympathy from Wearside, but the decision to ask Portsmouth's fans to go such a long way for an early kick-off underlines the contempt the schedulers too often show for travelling supporters.

Sunderland open their season at home to Oxford United on August 3, and their first away game is seven days later, at relegated Ipswich Town.
