But with matches coming thick and fast over the coming weeks, we should soon start to get a better idea of what Sunderland need to do to get back into the promotion frame.
Of course it's all about winning matches - there are enough games left that if Lee Johnson and Co get it right on the pitch with any level of consistency then the table will take care of itself.
That's easier said than done. Winning runs can create momentum, but there's no doubt the schedule will be demanding - and there are fears of more disruption to come.
