Sunderland's best side of 2019 - pick strongest XI from Ross and Parkinson's Black Cats squads

Sunderland will end 2019 in a very different fashion to how they entered the year almost 12 months ago.

The Black Cats were flying high in League One as the new year dawned, with promotion back to the Championship looking on the cards.

We all know what happened, of course, with Jack Ross' side struggling to cope with the backlog of fixtures and the loss of 16-goal striker Josh Maja late in the January transfer window.

Wembley play-off agony followed to Charlton, and while Ross brought in more new faces over the summer, Sunderland struggled to keep up with the promotion pace in the early stages of the current campaign.

Results ultimately cost him his job - but his successor Phil Parkinson has found life at the Stadium of Light even tougher.

Just two wins have come so far under the former Bolton and Bradford manager, and the Black Cats have dropped even further behind the promotion-chasing pack.

So who are Sunderland missing from the side which started the year so well? We've collated a Black Cats squad from the players to have featured the most over the course of 2019. All you have to do is pick the strongest XI.

Do the likes of Lee Cattermole and George Honeyman get into the side? And while Maja played just a handful of games, should he get in ahead of the current misfiring crop?

Pick your Sunderland 2019 XI above using our interactive team selector, and see how it compares with the most popular side.
