Sunderland Restaurant Week 'monitoring situation' as coronavirus outbreak continues

Sunderland Restaurant Week bosses are looking at ways they can keep the event going as they continue to monitor the coronavirus situation.

The event, which is due to start on Saturday until March 29, gives food-lovers a range of top dining experiences at bargain prices as they team up with local businesses.

However, the Prime Minister's speech on Monday encouraged the public to avoid restaurants and bars as stricter guidelines were put in place to protect people from the spread of Covid-19.

But the government did not order businesses to shut down leaving many owners fearing they may not be able to claim on insurance policies.

Since the speech, offices and businesses have closed as employees work from home - although many restaurants and pubs remain open.

Sunderland's Restaurant Week is one event trying to go ahead by finding "creative ways" they can support businesses while still getting the event to consumers.

Sharon Appleby, Head of Business Operations, Sunderland BID said: "We are obviously very mindful of the current situation and are constantly monitoring the Government advice and updates.

"We are currently working with the restaurants who are taking part to see if there are some more creative ways we can support them and still get Restaurant Week to consumers.

"We know it is very important that people are not put at risk and are working to see what we can do to help our local businesses."

With the constantly changing situation however, things could still change.

The number of coronavirus-related deaths in the UK has risen to 56, with one confirmed in the North East.

The Department of Health revealed on Tuesday that a total of 1,950 people have tested positive for Covid-19.
