Sunderland reportedly target move for Eredivisie midfielder during the January transfer window

Sunderland are targeting a move for Feyenoord midfielder Liam Kelly in the January transfer window.

That is according to the Sun, who claim the Black Cats want to bring the former Reading star back to England.

The 24-year-old only made the move to the Dutch giants in the summer but has made just two appearances in the Netherlands this season.

Kelly was brought to De Kuip by his former Reading boss Jaap Stam after he impressed during the Royals' run to the Championship play-off final in 2017.

But Stam has since been replaced by former Sunderland manager Dick Advocaat, who is yet to use him.

The former Republic of Ireland under-21 international is under contract in Rotterdam until 2022 and according to the report, Sunderland are one of three League One clubs prepared to offer him a route back to English football.

Oxford and MK Dons are also monitoring Kelly's situation.

Sunderland boss Phil Parkinson is under pressure after winning just two of his opening 13 games in charge and has made no secret of his desire to bring in reinforcements during the January transfer window.

He has already held discussions with head of recruitment Tony Coton to draw up a list of transfer targets next month.

Any move for Kelly could pave the way for Dylan McGeouch's exit, with the Scotland international midfielder said to be weighing up his future ahead of the January window.
