Sunderland reportedly closing in on their second signing of the summer

Sunderland are reportedly close to signing free agent midfielder Corry Evans, as Lee Johnson continues his squad revamp.

The Northern Ireland international was released by Championship side Blackburn Rovers this summer after eight years at Ewood Park, during which time he made more than 200 appearances fot the club.

The 30-year-old is the younger brother of Leicester City defender Jonny Evans, who spent two loan spells with Sunderland in 2006-07 and 2007-08 while still a Manchester United player.

Corry Evans also came through the ranks at Old Trafford, although he did not make a senior appearance for the Red Devils.

He later went on to join Carlisle on loan, and then spent time on loan at Hull City before joining the Tigers on a permanent basis in 2011, two years before his move to Blackburn.

During his time at Blackburn, he helped the club finish runners-up in League One in 2017-18 under Tony Mowbray to earn promotion to the Championship.

Evans has been capped 66 time by his country, and played in the 2016 European Championships.

Sunderland completed their first senior signing last week, when ex-Huddersfield Town midfielder Alex Pritchard joined the club.

But, three-and-a-half weeks before the new season start, the Black Cats' squad remains light on numbers.

Seven players were released over the summer, including midfielders Grant Leadbitter, Josh Scowen, and Max Power, while striker Charlie Wyke turned down a new contract and also opted to depart.
