Sunderland release six youngsters from Under-23's after PL2 play-off defeat

Sunderland's summer exodus has continued with the Black Cats releasing six players from the Under-23's squad.

The Under-23's narrowly missed out on promotion from PL2 following a penalty shootout defeat against Crystal Palace.

Brandon Taylor and Jake Hackett are among those to leave the Wearsiders having come through the ranks at the Academy of Light.

Lee Connelly has also been released having spent the 2020-21 season on loan at Scottish Championship side Alloa Athletic.

The 21-year-old striker scored twice in two loan spells with the Wasps in two spells north of the border.

Mitch Curry has also left the club having signed a contract in the US with Inter Miami CF earlier this season. The former Boro youngster is currently on loan at Fort Lauderdale CF.

Ryan Wombwell has also left the club to sign for Gateshead as a free agent, while fellow defender Bobby Beaumont also leaving the club upon expiry of his contract.

In a statement released on the club website, Sunderland said: "We would like to place on record our thanks to all six players and wish them the best of luck in their future careers."
