Sunderland pull the plug on move for Liverpool's Tony Gallacher, according to reports

Sunderland have pulled the plug on their move for Liverpool's Tony Gallacher, according to reports.

The Daily Mail claims the Black Cats have called off talks with the Red's Scottish full back on Wednesday night.

The Wearsiders are still without any full backs after the departure of Conor McLaughlin and Callum McFadzean, while Denver Hume is yet to sign a new deal with the club.

Lee Johnson is under no illusion that he needs bodies in before the curtain opener against Wigan Athletic, but Gallacher will not be one of those.

The former Falkirk defender, who spent last season on loan in the MLS with Toronto, is now assessing other transfer options.

Jurgen Klopp's side were prepared to cut the 22-year-old's contract short at Anfield but insert a sell-on clause into the transfer agreement.

Johnson refused to talk about Gallacher following Tuesday nights game against Tranmere Rovers, but did say he was on a list of options.

The Black Cats head coach said: "I've seen the reports and we know of him, he is on a list of 10-12 options.

"I always try and be optimistic [about signings]. Sometimes these things take a week, sometimes two weeks, sometimes they fall the next day.

"We are in the mix for a few, not just one, so we'll see."
