Sunderland prepared to offer Joe Pigott 'big wages' according to report

Sunderland are prepared to offer Joe Pigott "big wages" in an attempt to lure him to Wearside, according to reports.

The Portsmouth News claims Lee Johnson's side are in the "box seat" to sign the 27-year-old - if he's to stay in League One.

However, the Black Cats face competition from the Championship with Pigott believed to have already held talks with Luton Town, while having met fellow Championship club Bristol City for discussions last week.

It's unclear whether Pigott's representatives have met with Sunderland at this stage.

The striker scored 54 goals in 157 outings during a prolific three-and-a-half-year stay at the Wombles, including 22 goals last season for a Wimbledon side which finished 19th in League One.

Pigott was among the scorers as the Wombles took on a depleted Sunderland side at the Stadium of Light last season.

The Black Cats were in the midst of a Covid-19 outbreak and have to field a number of fringe players for the tie.

The Wombles took the lead through Pigott from the spot before Bailey Wright equalised just after the hour mark.

Pigott has resurrected his career in League One after dropping into Non-League with Maidstone and there are plenty of suitors chasing his signature.
