Sunderland predicted team vs Coventry - and the team we would start

Sunderland will still be without Charlie Wyke and Lynden Gooch for Coventry City's visit to the Stadium of Light on Saturday, with Marc McNulty also a doubt.

The injuries leave manager Phil Parkinson with limited options in the final third, as his forwards continue to struggle for form.

Parkinson will also be without Conor McLaughlin for the game, with the right-back suspended after picking up five yellow cards this term. But he is boosted by the return of Jordan Willis, Joel Lynch and George Dobson for the game.

So how will Parkinson's team likely look for the game? And does Craig Johns agree with that team?

Predicted Sunderland team

With such limited options right now, it feels quite easy to predict Parkinson's team right now, with the Black Cats boss unlikely to throw up many surprises for the visit of Coventry.

Perhaps the big decision will be who starts in goal, with Jon McLaughlin back from injury duty. But his form compared to Lee Burge's makes that seem an easy call.

Luke O'Nien will have to drop back to right back in the absence of Conor McLaughlin, while Willis and Lynch will likely return to the side with Denver Hume making up the back four.

Having Dobson back will allow Parkinson to go with his preferred midfield duo of the ex-Walsall man alongside Max Power, while Will Grigg is the only fit senior striker. The three in behind him are likely to be Duncan Watmore, Chris Maguire and Aiden McGeady in order of right to left.

Craig Johns' team

It's always better for the article if there are changes I would make to the team we predict Parkinson would select.

Alas, it would also be dishonest of me to suggest any changes to this week's team.

With so few options there is little room to manoeuvre for the Sunderland boss - particularly in the final third of the pitch where alternative options would be helpful with the current required starters massively out of form.

Given Alim Ozturk's solid game at Gillingham, you could make a strong case for 3-5-2, with Ozturk alongside Willis and Lynch, and Maguire playing as a central striker alongside Grigg or maybe even Watmore. Grigg and Watmore were played together in this formation on Tuesday, but the pair were to similar to one another, and Sunderland's style of play on the night suited neither of them.

Despite that, I don't expect Parkinson to change to three at the back, nor am I a particular fan of it either, so I'm afraid it's rather boring this week.
