Sunderland players react as they beat Portsmouth over two legs to reach Wembley play-off final

Sunderland battled hard to earn a 0-0 draw against Portsmouth at Fratton Park to advance to the play-off final at Wembley.

Chris Maguire's first leg goal at the Stadium of Light proved enough to seal the Black Cats' advancement after a professional display on the south coast.

Sky Sports caught up with numerous Sunderland players at full-time to get their quick reactions to reaching Wembley for a second time this season.

Below is the verdicts of Lee Cattermole, Jon McLaughlin, Luke O'Nien, Chris Maguire and George Honeyman.

Lee Cattermole

“I think if you want to go away from home with a 1-0 lead that’s the performance you want. We were different class tonight. We had a strong mentality.

“We’ve had some difficult games against Portsmouth but we were strong.

“Everyone has giving everything this season. The fans should feel like we have the club back. Off pitch it’s been great and attendances are up but we have work to do.”

John McLaughlin

“The whole group have been fantastic tonight. I made a couple of saves but it was a team effort.

“We were aiming to make it to that final. We know the quality we have in this team and we aim to put right the experience at Wembley that we had last night.”

George Honeyman

“It’s been our goal all season. Two trips to Wembley is great. There is one more step but we want to make sure we achieve that.

“We had a gameplan to go and win those second balls. It’s been the team which has got us here.”

Sunderland fans react as another Wembley final awaits

Luke O'Nien

"We’re going to Wembley and all the boys are buzzing.

"After the first leg we knew we were in a good position. We didn’t have to go chasing the game and thankfully we got over the line.

"It was special to see all the fans at full-time who’ve made the long trip and celebrate with them.

"We’ve been to Wembley before and hopefully we can use that and go one better this time."

Chris Maguire

"It’s been tough against Portsmouth every time we’ve played them and there’s been goals in every match - but tonight was a 0-0 draw and it was the goal in the first leg that’s got us there in the end.

“It was a great performance from the team and I think one that we deserved.”
