The Black Cats took the lead through half-time sub Aiden O'Brien within minutes of the second period getting under way.
And when Accrington's Ross Sykes was sent off for a second bookable offence 15 minutes from the end, they looked on course for victory.

But sloppy defending cost them at the death as Mitch Clark levelled five minutes from time.
