Sunderland owner Stewart Donald reveals he expects two new signings this week

Sunderland owner Stewart Donald believes the club will make 'two or three signings' before the end of the summer transfer window.

The Black Cats are known to be in the market for a new left-back with Jack Ross keen for competition for Denver Hume.

And Donald has told the Roker Rapport podcast that he is confident the Black Cats will add two defensive players to their ranks THIS week.

When asked whether Sunderland have money to make new signings before the end of the window, Donald replied: "Yep and we have been in that position all the way through.

"We’re talking about strengthening the team with two or three more signings before the window shuts.

"A couple of players on the desk are probably going to cost us half a million pounds if we decide they are the ones to go for.

"If you ask Jack [Ross], he is a bit more cautious than me, he would say ‘Oh, not quite yet’ but me being excitable I’ll say yes.

"We’re not far away on one and that one may extend to three but it might end up being two.

"If you asked me now, I would hope we will sign a couple of players next week but I would certainly expect there to be one.

"They’re defensive players."

Meanwhile, Sunderland's managing director Charlie Methven has explained the difficult balancing act they have had to juggle in the transfer market this summer.

The Black Cats have made five summer signings so far this summer but only George Dobson from Walsall commanded a transfer fee.

In terms of outgoings, club captain George Honeyman, Lamine Kone and Reece James were sold, while Lee Cattermole, Bryan Oviedo, Donald Love, Robbin Ruiter and Adam Matthews were allowed to leave the club without a transfer fee.

It has led some fans to question some of the club's transfer business but Methven has explained why the club have had to be a little more stringent this summer.

“The Board has also been mindful that sufficient funds need to be made available to build a squad to compete at the top of League One. Given the club’s huge outgoings on historic transfers, it has been a difficult balancing act," he explained in yesterday's match programme.

“However, in the last 13 months just over £5million has been spent on transfer fees, which is more than last season’s three promoted teams spent between them. This summer we also knocked back significant offers for players the management deemed vital to achieve promotion.

“It is very important to recognise that football matches, and indeed promotions, are not won on paper or by money alone. Once the whistle goes, it is 11 against 11. Opposition clubs have to be treated with the utmost respect by us all, whatever the financial wherewithal.

“However, it is the responsibility of every Board to run their club in such a way that the appropriate level of support is provided to the football management in order to achieve their stated ambitions - in this case, automatic promotion from League One.

“We believe that has been achieved, whilst shepherding the club away from the black hole in which some of our competitors have been sucked, as Pompey once was.”
