Sunderland owner Stewart Donald quits Twitter after admitting he needed a 're-think'

Sunderland owner Stewart Donald has removed his Twitter account hours after admitting he needed to 're-think' his use of the site.

It comes after Donald replied to a Black Cats fan on Sunday commenting on reports that the takeover talks with Mark Campbell had stalled.

The fan in question was then subjected to abuse after Donald's reply, to which the fan in question described Donald's tweet as 'encouraging a pile-on'.

On Monday morning Donald tweeted back to the fan apologising for the tweet and saying the resulting 'pile-on' was not his intention, and admitted a 're-think' of his use of Twitter was needed. Just over an hour later his account was removed from the social media site.

Donald's use of Twitter certainly divided fan opinion.

While his openness and willingness to communicate directly with supporters was generally welcomed, particularly after Ellis Short's silence over the years, there were some gaffes from the Black Cats majority shareholder.

Many fans believed he shared too much information via his Twitter, while many were worried that he was too consumed with replying to supporters about various issues rather than focusing on important tasks at hand at the club.

Donald took a break from the site recently as he looked to focus on club matters when they missed out on an automatic promotion spot. However, on that occasion his account was still there, whereas this time it has been removed it altogether.
