Sunderland overtake Ipswich and Portsmouth as the punter’s pick for League One winner

Sunderland have overtaken Ipswich and Portsmouth as the most-backed to win League One, for the first time since the market opened.

In the last 24 hours, a flurry of bets have been placed on the Black Cats to top the table come the end of the season, sending their price crashing.

In fact, 35% of all bets in the previous 24 hours have backed Jack Ross' side to win the league, far more than any other side in the league.

They’ve been cut from 9/2 into 4/1 to win the league this season, and are now clear favourites at the top of the market – ahead of Ipswich.

Elsewhere, Portsmouth are second-favourites to win the league at 11/2, followed by Ipswich at 8/1, with Rotherham (9/1) and Peterborough (14/1) following after.

Oddschecker spokesperson Callum Wilson: “League One is looking ultra-competitive at the top this year, and it's no surprise heavy-hitters Sunderland and Ipswich are right towards the top of the promotion market.

"There's pressure on Jack Ross after last season's play-off heartbreak, but some astute summer business has seen punters flock to back the Black Cats."

Sunderland began their season with an underwhelming 1-1 draw at home to Oxford United last weekend, but will be hoping to properly kickstart their promotion charge this weekend when they travel to title rivals Ipswich.
