Sunderland 'open talks' with Elliot Embleton over new contract

Sunderland are reported to have opened contract talks with their 22-year-old rising star Elliot Embleton to secure his place at the club.

The Durham-born midfielder is out of contract next summer, and having recently established himself as a key player in the first team, The Sun has reported that the club is eager to give him a new deal.

Embleton spent the second half of last season on loan at Blackpool, helping the Seasiders win promotion to the Championship, but returned to Sunderland in the summer.

Lee Johnson has since rewarded Embleton with a first-team spot. Embleton for his part has not let his manager down, providing multiple assists, including one in yesterday’s 2-2 draw with Fleetwood Town.

Embleton has also shown himself more than capable of scoring, with his first goal for the club coming against Milton Keynes last month, and another goal putting him in contention for the current Sky Bet League One Goal of the Month competition.

It was his goal in the Black Cats’ 3-1 win over Wycombe that got him nominated - where he curled a left-footer into the far corner of the net from outside the 18-yard box - and the winner will be announced next Friday. Voting closes tomorrow.

The Sun reported that the Black Cats have the option of extending Embleton’s deal by another year, but according to the newspaper, Sunderland would prefer instead to get Embleton signed up to a new, longer-term deal.

Embleton came up through the academy at Sunderland and made his debut for the club back in 2017.
