Sunderland must pay Wigan Athletic £300,000 pay-out if they get promoted to the Championship

Sunderland will be forced to pay Wigan Athletic a fee of £300,000 if they earn promotion to the Championship, according to reports.

The Sun on Sunday said that the Black cats would owe the Latics £300,000 as part of a clause in the transfer deals for Will Grigg and Max Power.

It's been a tough few seasons for Grigg in particular who has struggled to find the back of the net on Wearside.

Sunderland brought the Northern-Irish international to the club for a £3million deal but hasn't found the net for Lee Johnson's side this season.

He was given a lifeline on deadline day and headed to League One rivals MK Dons.

Grigg has since scored twice and assisted twice in his short stay at Stadium:MK.

Sunderland captain Max Power has had a more successful stay at the Stadium of Light - particularly since Lee Johnson's arrival.

The 27-year-old has been impressive in recent weeks and has established himself as a key member of Sunderland's starting XI.
