Sunderland mum left seriously injured in crash wants former friend sacked from NHS nurse job

Sipping beer, lifelong friends Natalie Cave and Leanne McGough pose for a selfie before an Ed Sheeran gig.

But around a month later, their friendship was ruined forever.

A glamping trip to Northumberland for Natalie's birthday ended in horror after she was hit by the driver of an Audi.

Her ankle was crushed, with the pain made worse as debris from a nearby campfire drifted into her bloody wounds.

The drunk teenage driver had been given impromptu lessons by McGough on the campsite.

But McGough, a respected nurse at Sunderland's Royal Hospital, lied in a bid to avoid blame - only to later admit it to police.

To Natalie's fury, the NHS worker walked free from court.

However, she now faces a hearing to decide whether she should be allowed to continue her career.

As Natalie recovers from her fourth operation in 14 months on her "shattered" ankle, she thinks there should only be one outcome.

"She shouldn't be working now," said the 30-year-old, who left her Greggs job following the August 2018 incident.

"I know it sounds petty, but why should she be able to go to work when I'm unable to?

"She has made my life hell because of her actions and she is still living the good life, and here is me struggling to walk to the toilet."

On Wednesday, Natalie underwent her latest operation. She's been told she faces another in three months time.

She hopes she will recover from her injuries, which included a broken ankle and ligament damage.

The incident initially left her in hospital for a month.

McGough was reportedly at the wheel of the Audi at first before allowing the 16-year-old to drive.

Pleading guilty to perverting the course of justice, McGough also admitted causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

At Newcastle Crown Court, the defendant's 21-month jail sentence was suspended for two years.

McGough, then of Sheppard Terrace in Sunderland, was ordered to also carry out 200 hours of unpaid work.

She is now due to appear at a Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) hearing on November 8.

While a NMC spokesperson wouldn't confirm details of the charges prior to the Edinburgh hearing, a panel will determine if she is fit to practice.

Sentencing her in April, Mr Recorder Richard Thyne reportedly said she would be a "significant loss" to nursing and the hospital.
