Sunderland monitoring former Arsenal defender with Championship clubs circling

Sunderland are monitoring former Arsenal defender Terell Thomas, according to reports.

The Daily Mail claims the Black Cats are among a number of clubs chasing the former Gunners trainee.

Thomas, who is set to leave AFC Wimbledon upon the expiration of is contract, has flourished at the Dons.

Blackburn Rovers and Barnsley are two of the Championship sides who are also interested in the athletic centre half.

The 25-year-old defender has made 73 appearances for the Wombles since joining in 2018.

However, the former Charlton and Wigan Athletic man has struggled for game time in the latter part of the season after being hospitalised with pneumonia in January.

It took Thomas months to battle back from the illness before being named on Wimbledon's bench on the final day of the season against Lincoln City.

The Black Cats are on the hunt for players across the board having released seven players at the end of the season, while the exodus may not be over.

Lee Johnson is keen on building a young and energetic side that's capable of executing his high pressing game plan more consistently.

The Wearsiders have been linked with a number of defenders so far and were given a transfer boost when Huddersfield Town ruled themselves out of the running for target Dion Sanderson.
