Sunderland miss out on 'target' Luke Thomas after joining Ipswich

Sunderland 'target' Luke Thomas has joined Ipswich Town on loan for the remainder of the 2020/21 season.

The Barnsley winger was linked with a move to the Stadium of Light earlier in the window.

The Black Cats were among a number of League One clubs interested in the midfielder, according to reports.

Thomas, who can also operate further forward, was part of the youth setup at West Bromwich Albion before moving to Cheltenham Town where he became a professional.

He left the Robins in 2016 to join Derby County where he had two spells from Pride Park with Gloucester City and Coventry City.

The 21-year-old would go on to make two league appearances for the Rams - signing for Barnsley in 2019.

The winger scored the winner on his debt for the Tykes against Fulham in August 2019. Thomas would become a regular at Oakwell and make 42 appearances for The Tykes in the 2019/20 season.
