Sunderland man admits killing 77-year-old dad following Christmas Eve disturbance

A Sunderland man has pleaded guilty to killing his elderly dad.

Paul Conlon was due to stand trial accused of murdering 77-year-old Harry Conlon, who was found injured on Christmas Eve.

But before a jury were sworn in at Newcastle Crown Court, Conlon, 43, pleaded guilty to manslaughter - which was accepted by prosecutors.

The case was adjourned until Tuesday, when the facts will be outlined and Conlon, of no fixed address, will be sentenced.

It was shortly before 3pm on Christmas Eve, officers were called to an address on Deansfield Close, Sunderland, following a report of a disturbance.

Officers attended and found Harry Conlon with injuries to his head consistent with having been assaulted.

The victim was taken to hospital and his Paul Conlon was arrested at the scene

Mr Conlon died as a result of his injuries on January 18 this year.

Conlon's sentencing hearing is set to take place at Newcastle Crown Court on Tuesday.
