Sunderland linked with out of contract Mothewell winger - but will still have to pay

Sunderland have been linked with a move for out-of-contract Motherwell winger Chris Cadden.

The Scotland international has failed to come to an agreement over a new deal at the Fir Park club and looks set to leave this summer.

The Black Cats and Oxford United have been credited with interest in the 22-year-old, with a report in the Scottish Daily Express claiming Jack Ross is keen to bring him to Wearside.

While he is out of contract, any move would be liable to a compensation fee due to his age, although moves from one FA to another usually have a smaller fee involved.

And Football Scotland report this morning that could be in the region of £200,000.

Sunderland are thought to be keen to strengthen in the wide areas, with Lewis Morgan's loan ended, and Lynden Gooch in and out of the side last season.

Cadden has played twice for Scotland, making his debut against Peru in May 2018, but scored just once in 25 appearances for Motherwell last season.

His only time away from the club came during a loan spell with Albion Rovers in the 2014-15 season, which saw him score twice in 10 appearances.
