Sunderland leisure centres donate food from their cafés to local charity to help the vulnerable during Covid-19

Leisure centres in Sunderland have donated food from their cafés to charity in order to support vulnerable people in the area during the coronavirus pandemic.

A number of leisure centres managed by Everyone Active in partnership with Sunderland City Council were able to provide fresh food and tinned produce to St Benedict’s Church which provides food packs for the elderly and homeless.

Amongst the food donated earlier this week included crisps, cheese, soft drinks and a selection of fresh food.

Ian Bradgate, Contract Manager at Everyone Active, said: “We’re committed to helping the wider community and supporting those who may be experiencing social isolation at this time and those who just need a helping hand.

"Volunteers at St Benedict’s Church will be using our donations to put together food packs for the elderly and homeless. We’re proud to be able to support the work they do during such a challenging time.

"We hope that our donations will offer some comfort and support to those who need it most.”

Following the government’s guidance to close all leisure centres across the UK, it's hoped these donations will support those in need throughout the coronavirus outbreak.
