Sunderland legend makes Newcastle United relegation jibe

Sunderland legend Micky Gray has taken aim at Newcastle United amid their Premier League relegation worries.

Newcastle are just one place and two points outside the drop zone with nine fixtures of the season remaining.

Manager Steve Bruce and his team have come under increasing pressure following a run of just two wins in 20 matches.

The Magpies went into the current international break with a dismal 3-0 defeat to fellow strugglers Brighton & Hove Albion.

Rivals Sunderland are two dvisions below in League One but are mounting a promotion challenge as they bid to clinch a return to the Championship.

The Black Cats have enjoyed a resurgence under new boss Lee Johnson and are unbeaten in 12 games in all competitions.

That run has included victory over Tranmere Rovers at Wembley to lift the Papa John's Trophy.

In the league, Sunderland are unbeaten in 10 matches - winning eight and drawing two.

On Saturday, they triumphed 1-0 away to Bristol Rovers, thanks to a 39th-minute strike from Aiden O'Brien.

That result has left them third in the table, three points behind leaders Hull City, with two games in hand, and two points behind second-placed Peterborough United, with one game in hand on them.

With 10 fixtures of the campaign remaining, Sunderland have a 10-point cushion inside the play-off zone, though will be setting their sights on one of the two automatic promotion spots.

After their latest victory, Gray took to social media, posting on Twitter that his former club had "10 Cup Finals" ahead of them.

A mischievous Newcastle fan replied, saying: "Micky it’s 10 third division games."

But Gray had the final say as he responded: "(You're) right it is but when we win them we will be playing you next season."

The 46-year-old former England international ended the tweet with several laughing emojis - but Newcastle supporters may not see the funny side.
