Sunderland Labour Councillor to fight against plans for 5G mast in popular Wearside beauty spot

A Labour Councillor in Sunderland has stated that he plans to fights against plans for a new 5G mast to be installed in the Tunstall area of the city.

Cllr Phil Tye, who resides in Silksworth was disgusted when mobile network provider O2 revealed they had plans of erecting the mast near Tunstall Hill - as it would block the stunning views the historic landmark has to offer.

The Labour ward Councillor is also hoping for backup from the community - urging local residents to 'make their voices heard' and oppose official plans processed by Sunderland City Council.

Although proposals for the 20-metre mast to be installed on the corner of the Precinct, Cllr Tye believes that the view of the hill will be tarnished.

Instead he believes the site should be protected, as it is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).

He plans to make an official objection to the erection of the mast, claiming that it will impact the local environment through noise pollution, and has also been very sceptical of the negative health effects of being exposed to 5G, as the mast is planned to be placed just six metres from residents' homes.

In a public statement, Councillor Tye said: “I am very clear that these plans should not go ahead and I will be doing everything in my power to ensure that the voice of my community is heard and that these proposals are blocked.

“Tunstall Hills is one of the most scenic parts of the city – the views from it are unspoilt.

"The last thing we need is a 20-meter-high mast impinging on that, and on the doorstep of residents whose peace will be impacted – and indeed, who knows what the impact may be on people’s health.

“I will be urging residents in my ward to object to these plans officially, and ensure that the planning committee hears the will of people in Silksworth and acts accordingly.”

Councillor Tye is asking people to contact him directly to raise concerns, which he will feed back to council officials.

To raise concerns to Councillor Tye, email Cllr.Philip.Tye@sunderland.gov.uk.
