Sunderland are keeping a close eye on Crawley Town forward Tom Nichols.
Sources told the Chronicle that the Black Cats have been watching the 27-year-old - who signed for the Red Devils in September 2020.
The 5ft 10in striker has scored seven goals in 22 appearances since arriving in the summer.
Nichols, who is out of contract in the summer, has League One experience with Peterborough United and most recently Bristol Rovers.
Lee Johnson said that Sunderland's incoming business would be complete if they were to get a striker in.
They've since paid a fee in the region of around £300,000 for Ross Stewart from Ross County.
