Sunderland home sealed off by council over safety fears sells for 10 times guide price at auction

A Sunderland home sealed off by the council after being deemed unsafe has sold for more than 10 times the guide price at auction.

The property on Broomshields Avenue in Fulwell was listed for auction with a guide price of just £10,000 on Bond Wolfe Auctions, based in Birmingham.

But the four-bedroom house ended up selling at auction for £101,000.

The house was sealed off by Sunderland City Council after it suffered significant subsidence in August 2019.

The driveway had sunk into the ground and warning signs which said ‘Construction site keep out' and ‘No unauthorised access’ were put up at the property's entrance.

Residents on the street were left without gas and water for a short time while the supplies were cut when the house was sealed off.

In a statement, Sunderland City Council said: "The property is currently unsafe due to structural issues resulting from subsidence issues that were reported to the city council last year.

"Barriers remain in place as a precautionary measure to protect the public.

"Although it appears that the barriers were recently removed - we’re not sure by who or for what reason - these have now been reinstated by the council and will remain in place pending a decision on the longer-term plans for the building’s future.

"This is something that rests with the property owner. It is not a matter for the local authority."
