Police say they have recovered a vehicle thought to have been involved in a hit-and-run, which left one man in hospital.

Ramillies Road in  Red House  , Sunderland, was taped off by police for almost 11 hours on Tuesday following the 3.20am collision.

One man was taken to hospital by paramedics with what officers described as "serious injuries".

He remains in a "critical but stable" condition.

On Wednesday morning, police said they had recovered a Renault car which they believe was involved in the hit-and-run.

Officers are asking witnesses to come forward as they search for the driver.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: "Officers have recovered a vehicle as part of their ongoing investigation into a collision on Ramillies Road, Sunderland.

"Yesterday (October 1) at about 3.20am we received a report a man had been hit by a car which had then made off from the scene.

"A silver Renault was then located by officers a short time later in a car park in Roedean Road, Sunderland and has been recovered by officers for forensic investigation."

Anyone with information is asked to call Northumbria Police on 101 quoting reference 84 011019.
