Sunderland headteacher suspended after claiming staff 'sat at home doing nothing' during lockdown

A Sunderland headteacher has been suspended after suggesting some of her teachers were “sat at home doing nothing” during lockdown.

Pauline Wood, head of Grange Park Primary School, is now under investigation.

It follows comments she made during an interview with BBC Radio Newcastle, the Mirror reports.

She told the radio station that while some teachers had been coming up with "the most imaginative, amazing things" in terms of teaching remotely - others "sit at home doing nothing".

Ms Wood said she "won't defend those people" during the interview in which parents had sent in messages about their worries around the level of support children were getting from school.

When asked if her comments about certain teachers "doing nothing" applied to her school, she said: "Yes, I think it's time we talked about the elephant in the room."

The school governors suspended Ms Wood over claims she made “potentially disparaging comments” about her staff.

But Ms Wood told Schools Week: “It is very concerning that a headteacher can be suspended for giving a truthful answer to questions posed by members of the public.”
