Sunderland have given free away shirts to the estimated 1,400 fans who made the journey to Upton Park for the club’s game at West Ham.
The gesture is part of the club’s ongoing efforts to show appreciation to their supporters as the club endures yet another struggle against relegation. On Monday they announced a reduction in season-ticket prices for next season, which could see prices as low as £18 per game.
The club announced the giveaway of the bright green away shirts – which are not a universal sartorial hit among fans and have recently been reduced from £50 to £40 in the club shop – in a statement on their website.
“To thank their fan for such tremendous backing, every Sunderland fan at the Boleyn Ground on Saturday will be given a 2015-16 away shirt courtesy of Sunderland AFC, with club staff inside the ground handing out the vibrant green away shirts to fans as they arrive,” said the statement.
“Supporters are also asked to take their seats slightly earlier than usual, ensuring that they are wearing their shirts, so that a photograph can be taken of the whole away end just before kick-off.”
