Sunderland forced to pay six figure sum to Argentine side Velez Sarsfield over Ricky Alvarez dispute

Sunderland have had to pay a six-figure sum to Argentine side Velez Sarsfield over the infamous Ricky Alvarez transfer.

The Black Cats initially signed the Argentina international on a loan deal from Inter Milan in 2014 and had agreed to sign him for €10.5m to make the deal permanent at the end of that season.

Alvarez made just 17 appearances during his one season on Wearside and Sunderland tried to pull out of the agreement they had made with the Italian giants.

Sunderland cited Inter's refusal to treat Alvarez for a knee injury as grounds to pull out of the deal but they were later ordered to pay the fee in full by the Court of Arbitration For Sport and FIFA.

As part of a ruling in March, Sunderland were ordered to pay € 362,500 to Velez Sarsfield as a solidarity payment for helping to develop Alvarez as a youngster.

And in a statement on their website, the Argentine top flight outfit confirmed that Sunderland have now made that payment.

As part of the dispute, Alvarez missed out on the entire first half of the 2015/16 campaign. He joined Sampdoria in 2016 on a free transfer and now plies his trade with Mexican side Atlas.
