Sunderland flop Jack Rodwell set to be offered a Premier League return

Sunderland flop Jack Rodwell is closing in on a return to the Premier League - with Sheffield United considering offering him a short-term deal.

Blades' boss Chris Wilder has confirmed that the 28-year-old has been working with the South Yorkshire side in a bid to win a permanent deal.

Wilder told reporters: "It's not a trial. Jack is in for a few days. We know about Jack. He's without a club at the moment after a couple of experiences training (with clubs) in Italy.

"As you've seen in the past, David McGoldrick came in for a few days and Jack is looking at us and we are looking at Jack.

"He is obviously a very, very talented player who obviously should be playing in the Premier League regularly, but for one reason or another isn't.

"He's got a really good attitude and he is in for a few days. It's basically him looking at us and us looking at him to see how he is in terms of how healthy he is.

"But he is obviously a talent because of the team's he's played for and he's looking for a home and it's something that might develop along the way."

The midfielder joined the Black Cats from Everton in August 2014 for a fee of around £10million but was plagued by injuries which limited him to just 67 appearances in four seasons.

He was later made to train with the youth side before joining Blackburn Rovers on a free transfer in August 2018 - that lasted just one season.

The summer saw Rodwell linked with Serie A side AS Roma but the move didn't come off, and former England U21 star has been without a club since.
