Sunderland fire: Why plumes of smoke could be seen over the city centre

Smoke could be seen filling the sky over Sunderland city centre after a bush fire broke out.

Footage was captured of black smoke rising up from Cork Street close to the River Wear.

The plume of smoke rose above buildings but the flames were quickly doused.

One crew from Sunderland Central station were called to the bush fire at around 8am on Thursday.

The fire was quickly dealt with and Tyne and Wear firefighters have since left with scene.
