Sunderland favourite Jermain Defoe names Alan Shearer as greatest ever striker

Sunderland favourite Jermain Defoe has named Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer as the greatest ever striker, admitting he admired him as a young player.

Shearer remains as the Premier League's all-time leading scorer with a tally of 260 goals, almost 100 more than Defoe's overall tally of 162 goals.

That record is unlikely to be broken anytime soon, with Wayne Rooney the only player alongside Shearer to have scored over 200 Premier League goals.

As such, Defoe is confident that Shearer is one of the greatest ever and believes that he could have scored even more if he didn't miss as many games.

“He’s an unbelievable goalscorer and someone who missed a lot of games as well, so it could have been a lot more," he told Sky Sports.

“Someone who scored all types of goals. Headers and sorts of types of goals. To score 260 Premier League goals and still be at the top, that is special.

“Even now when the goals come on the telly I enjoy watching his goals. Even as a young lad I always admired him. He’s the best.”
