Sunderland fans want Hummel kit return next season after Seaham Red Star unveil lovely new strip

Sunderland fans are hoping to see the club sign a kit manufacturing deal with Hummel after seeing Northern League side Seaham Red Star's new kit.

Adidas have been the Black Cats' kit manufacturers since 2012, and in 2014 the two agreed a six-year deal which was the longest single kit deal in the club's history.

But that deal is now in it's final season with many supporters once again underwhelmed by the iconic sports brand's latest offering for the 2019-20 season.

The end of the deal will leave Sunderland free to explore other potential kit manufacturers for next season - with fans keen to see a return to Hummel - the Danish sports manufacturer who made Sunderland's kits between 1988 and 1994 (albeit, there were only two home shirts in that period).

And when nearby Northern League side Seaham Red Star released their new home kit from Hummel this weekend, it naturally had many Sunderland fans talking, given that the two sides both wear red and white stripes.

The Star's new kit draws similarities to Sunderland's first under Hummel, with the brand's famous chevrons running down the sleeves. The Sunderland kit in question was worn between 1988 and 1991 and is synonymous with popular strike duo G Force - Eric Gates and Marco Gabbiadini.

Popular fanzine A Love Supreme tweeted Seaham's kit launch picture on Sunday evening, prompting many positive responses.

David Quarmby said: "Couple of bits of black on there and it would be the best strip we have had in years."

Sean Warrener said: "It's beautiful. I pray Hummel are providing our kits next year", while Richard added, "Safc players should be wearing this next season!"

Roy Williams added: "It's much better than our new home shirt."

Sunderland are yet to unveil their new away kit for the upcoming season, but supporters will be hoping it's the final effort from Adidas for some time.

There's a good possibility Sunderland could strike a deal with Hummel next summer.

The Danish manufacturer recently stepped up their football sponsorship in the UK again, agreeing deals with Rangers and Middlesbrough last summer.

Like Sunderland, the Hummel brand had historic significance to supporters in Teesside. Hummel produced the club’s kits between 1984 and 1987, a time, as Hummel put it, 'of emergence, depression and rebirth' in the region.
