Sunderland fans turn on Jack Ross as Black Cats draw at Bolton

Sunderland fans turned on manager Jack Ross as the Black Cats drew 1-1 at Bolton.

Fans sung that Ross didn't know what he was doing, and some even sung that he'd be sacked in the morning as they went 1-0 down at the University of Bolton Stadium.

And while Aiden McGeady's penalty rescued a point for Ross' side, you get the feeling it was far from enough to change the minds of the frustrated supporters both at the game, and following from home.

Pressure has been building on the Scot for a number of weeks, with many fans voicing concerns over his management of the club.

And it seems for many, Saturday's draw at bottom of the league Bolton was the final straw after a frustrating performance against a side who before the game had not won all season and hadn't scored at home in the league.

Sunderland were poor throughout, but still squandered a number of opportunities in the game. And when Jack Hobbs put the hosts ahead, frustration from the 4,037 supporters in the away end grew.

Things really turned in the 66th minute, however, when Ross made his second substitute of the afternoon. At first fans ironically cheered the introduction of Charlie Wyke, only to realise he was replacing fan-favourite Chris Maguire.

Match summary as Sunderland avoid embarrassing defeat at the death at Bolton

Cue chants of 'You don't know what you're doing' from the away end aimed at the Scot.

Just moments later Bolton fans, hardly able to believe their luck at winning, began chanting 'You're getting sacked in the morning' at Ross. Rather damningly, some in the away end joined in.

Ross joined Sunderland from St Mirren in the summer of 2018 and admitted himself he failed in his first season at the club as they missed out on promotion back to the Championship after losing to a last-minute goal against Charlton at Wembley in the play-off final. He also guided the club to the Checkatrade Trophy final last term, but they lost that to Portsmouth on penalties.

Saturday's result at Bolton sees Sunderland drop to fifth in the table, now five points of top of the league Ipswich. What chairman Stewart Donald's next move will be will be interesting, with a takeover from American investors close to completion. Donald will remain at the club after the takeover.
