Sunderland fans react as ex-striker Danny Graham is linked with a return on a free transfer

Danny Graham has been linked with a shock return to Sunderland, four years after his departure.

The striker, now 34, is available on a free transfer this summer and a report in the Sun on Sunday claimed Phil Parkinson was interested.

Despite his advancing age, Graham has been a regular for Championship side Blackburn, and would certainly suit the mould of striker that would seemingly fit Parkinson's system.

But the rumour has divided Black Cats fans, with some optimistic that despite his torrid first spell at the Stadium of Light - that saw him net just once in four years - he could add something now that Sunderland are operating in League One as opposed to the Premier League.

But there are those that see his age as a concerning factor, while others aren't able to look past his poor first Sunderland spell.

Graham himself has admitted in the past to Chronicle Live how much sadness he had over his lack of success at the club.

“It was well documented that I was a boyhood Newcastle United fans, but there was no doubts at all about going to Sunderland when I heard their interest,” he reflected.

“I saw it as a great opportunity to play for a massive football club.

“We all know it didn’t work out - of that I’ll be the first to hold my hands up. It wasn’t a successful time there, but that wasn’t for the want of trying.

“There’s absolutely no regrets for me. It was great to play for a massive club in my native North East.

“That was massive for me and I am gutted it didn’t work out, but that’s life and you have to move on unfortunately.”

Here's how Sunderland fans reacted when we asked their opinion.

Those in favour

Joseph Anderson and John Monaghan both agreed that he would be 'better than Charlie Wyke', who is Sunderland's current first-choice striker.

And Tony Higgins was optimistic about what he could offer in the third tier. He said: "To get us out of that league yes he will score 15 to 20 in League One."

The redemption story

Cam Newton could see the appeal in the redemption story, but was realistic about whether it would actually work out as such. He said: "Would be great if he joined and scored the goals that get us out of league one. Would be a cool redemption story. But of course, that would be too ideal of a story for Sunderland."

A flat no

Many didn't offer too much of explanation but were quite clear in their disapproval of such a signing.

Age concerns

Graham made 38 appearances last term for Rovers, but turns 35 next month. That was clearly a concern for many fans.

On Facebook, Alan Granton wrote: "Welcome back for a few beers and a chat, but really we need to rebuild and old ex-players are not a good strategy."

Denise Sheraton agreed. "We are never going to get out of this league taking players over 30, we need players with pace, not ex-players past their best," she opined.

Would fans give him a fair chance?
