Sunderland fans offer support to Charlie Wyke after ex-Black Cats striker admitted to hospital

Former Sunderland striker Charlie Wyke has been ruled out of Wigan Athletic's squad for the immediate future after collapsing before the Latics game against Cambridge United.

The 28-year-old was taken to hospital where he continues to be monitored after receiving treatment from the club's medical staff.

In a statement, Wigan said Wyke was "in a stable condition and is in communication with his family, hospital staff and the Club’s medical team."

The club also added that the former Black Cats striker would be monitored in the coming days.

Wigan Athletic Chief Executive, Mal Brannigan, said: “First and foremost, the absolute priority for everyone associated with Wigan Athletic is Charlie’s health and wellbeing and providing support to him and his family.

“As a Club, we would like to place on record our sincere appreciation to all of the staff within the NHS who, within what we know are challenging times, were excellent in their response and subsequent care for Charlie, working together with our medical team.

“Clearly this news will cause alarm, though we would politely request that the privacy of Charlie and his family is respected. At the appropriate time, we will look to provide further updates to our supporters.”

Red and White fans have taken to Twitter to send last season's top goal scorer messages of support, with Sunderland leading the way.

@MartinPurvis6 tweeted: "Get well soon Charlie Wyke. 30 plus goals for Sunderland last season which will never be forgotten."

@GlenProctor88 said: "All the best Charlie, fingers crossed for a full and speedy recovery!"
