Sunderland fans name the Black Cats' greatest Premier League legend

Kevin Phillips has been voted Sunderland's greatest Premier League legend by Black Cats' supporters.

The prolific frontman came out on top following a poll on our Chronicle SAFC Twitter page dedicated to finding the club's greatest player since 1992.

Phillips was one of 64 contenders for the crown, pipping former striker partner Niall Quinn to the title in the final vote. The 46-year-old was the overwhelming choice, earning a remarkable 71.4% of the vote.

The former England international made 235 appearances for the Black Cats between 1997 and 2003, bagging an impressive 130 goals.

Phillips went on to enjoy spells at a host of clubs across England including Southampton, Aston Villa, Crystal Palace and Leicester City before retiring.

Supporters voted in our poll which saw two players advance from groups of four, before entering a straight knockout contest.

Phillips saw off competition from Steed Malbranque and Julio Arca en route to the final.

In the end, Arca was forced to settle for fourth place after losing the third-placed playoff to Jermain Defoe.

Kevin Ball, Jordan Henderson, and Lee Cattermole rounded out the final eight.
