Sunderland fans make the same joke as tier three restrictions announced

Sunderland fans have made the same joke after tier three restrictions were imposed on the north east.

Fans will remain unable to attend matches in tier three areas, whilst clubs in tier one and tier two will be allowed to welcome a small number of supporters to games.

It means Black Cats fans will be spared going to see their side for the time being - something that many are viewing as a blessing in disguise following the club's poor form.

With Sunderland in the middle of the third tier of English football, other fans are joking that it could be a close call to see whether the club or the area leave tier three first.

With the Black Cats not having a game scheduled in a tier one or tier two area between now and when restrictions are reviewed, all of their games will remain behind closed doors until December 16 at the earliest.

No elite football club has fallen in a tier one area but a handful of Premier League clubs, along with some EFL sides, have been included in tier two areas.

That means a maximum of 2,000 fans, or 50 per cent of a stadium's capacity - whichever is lowest - will be allowed to attend games.

The government are said to be preparing a code of conduct for fans to follow in order to attend matches.

That means there will likely be strict rules for fans to follow, such as not interacting with fans outside their social bubble.

Yet singing and shouting at matches is expected to be permitted.

With restrictions being reviewed on December 16, the earliest game Sunderland fans could attend is on December 22 against Blackpool.
